O impacto da hepatite C em Portugal
Conclusions In Portugal, the annual costs associated to hepatitis C are about 71 million euros of which approximately 83% (60 million euros) being due to complications of disease and liver transplant, often required in the treatment of these complications. The results of this study support that, from a society's perspective, VHC infection is a disease with a considerable economic burden, which therefore justifies the conduction of a national screening and prevention program directed to hepatitis C, which would reinforce the relevance of its treatment.

Clinical and histological features of patients with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis classified by immunofluorescence findings.
CONCLUSIONS: The only difference between the groups was higher vascular involvement in renal biopsy in negative immunofluorescence group. These new classification was satisfactory for the finding of etiology in one part of the cases. PMID: 29319772 [PubMed - in process]

Deep venous thrombosis and chikungunya virus

Conclusion In our study, a meal altered LS value in chronic hepatitis B without suspected fibrosis (low LS). As it does not seem to interfere significantly with the clinical management of our patients, we can not, at this point, make any suggestion about the usefulness of performing this exam in the fasting condition.

Visualizing the hepatic vascular architecture using superb microvascular imaging in patients with hepatitis C virus: A novel technique.
CONCLUSION: SMI permitted the detailed delineation of the vascular architecture in chronic liver disease. SMI appears to be a reliable tool for noninvasively detecting significant fibrosis or cirrhosis in HCV patients. PMID: 27468197 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Autotaxin and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor ‐2 and ‐3 are related to vascular development during the progression of chronic viral hepatitis C
This study examines whether these two angiogenic factors cooperate in the mechanism that regulates vascular development during the progression of chronic viral hepatitis C (CVH ‐C) (Inuyama classification, F1–F4). First, surgical wedge biopsy specimens and needle biopsy specimens were obtained. Immunohistochemical staining for ATX and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor was assessed in serial sections. Immunoelectron microscopy was conducted with a perfusion‐ fixation method. In normal control liver tissue specimens, ATX was expressed at low levels within the branches of the hepatic artery and hepatic sinusoi...

Exploring the Link Between Platelet Numbers and Vascular Homeostasis Across Early and Late Stages of Fibrosis in Hepatitis C
ConclusionIn chronic HCV, progressive decline in platelets and growth factors with fibrosis and their associations suggest that platelets are an important source of circulating GFs and influence GF decline with fibrosis. Enhanced markers of vascular injury in patients with early fibrosis suggest an earlier onset of endothelial dysfunction preceding cirrhosis. Associations of VIMs with platelets suggest a critical link between platelets and vascular homeostasis. Circulating markers of vascular injury may not only have prognostic importance but emphasize the role of vascular dysfunction in liver disease pathogenesis (NCT00001971).

Retinal vascular complications associated with interferon ‐ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C: A population‐based study
ConclusionsInterferon‐ribavirin therapy was associated with a 53.3% increased risk of retinal vascular complications compared with not receiving the therapy. Regular ophthalmologic examination is essential for patients receiving interferon‐ribavirin, particularly those with hypertension.

SemEHR: A general-purpose semantic search system to surface semantic data from clinical notes for tailored care, trial recruitment, and clinical research*
ConclusionResults from the multiple case studies demonstrate SemEHR ’s efficiency: weeks or months of work can be done within hours or minutes in some cases. SemEHR provides a more comprehensive view of patients, bringing in more and unexpected insight compared to study-oriented bespoke IE systems. SemEHR is open source, available athttps://github.com/CogStack/SemEHR.

Nonviral Injection-Related Injuries in Persons Who Inject Drugs: Skin and Soft Tissue Infection, Vascular Damage, and Wounds
GENERAL PURPOSE To explore skin and soft-tissue infections and vascular damage in persons who inject drugs and relate these changes to wound development and care. TARGET AUDIENCE This continuing education activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses with an interest in skin and wound care. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES After participating in this educational activity, the participant should be better able to: 1. Review the issues surrounding wound infections in persons who inject drugs. 2. Describe the risk factors and manifestations of wound infections in persons who ...

Arterial thrombosis in the context of HCV-associated vascular disease can be prevented by protein C.
Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major problem worldwide. HCV is not limited to liver disease but is frequently complicated by immune-mediated extrahepatic manifestations such as glomerulonephritis or vasculitis. A fatal complication of HCV-associated vascular disease is thrombosis. Polyriboinosinic:polyribocytidylic acid (poly (I:C)), a synthetic analog of viral RNA, induces a Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)-dependent arteriolar thrombosis without significant thrombus formation in venules in vivo. These procoagulant effects are caused by increased endothelial synthesis of tissue factor and PAI-1 withou...

Association of conjunctival and corneal calcification with vascular calcification among hepatitis-C-seropositive hemodialysis patients.
Abstract Disorders associated with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) have been reported including cardiovascular, metabolic, and central nervous system diseases. Since chronic HCV infections may be curable, their identification as causal contributors to cardiovascular risk could offer new perspectives in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between HCV and aortic arch calcification (AAC) and corneal and conjunctival calcification (CCC) in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients; further, we assessed the correlation of CCC with vascular calcification. A total o...
